City looking for a Swift riposte

WORCESTER City will hope they do not succumb to the Bank Holiday blues this weekend when they take on county rivals Stourport Swifts.

The two sides lock horns at the Victoria Ground on Monday with the Blue and Whites hoping to find some rhythm in their bid to climb up the Midland League Premier Division table.

After back-to-back league defeats, John Snape’s men were denied their first three points of the campaign on Saturday when they were held to a 2-2 draw by visiting Coventry United.

United broke the deadlock after 27 minutes when Kyle Carey’s looping header deceived City keeper Matt Gwynne, with the ball floating into the far corner.

The goal seemed to unsettle City but they regrouped and managed to grab the equaliser in the 35th minute through Matt Birley.

City’s pressure began to tell and they got their just rewards five minutes before the break when Dave Reynolds arrowed home from inside the area to give the hosts a slender half-time lead.

It took just six minutes into the second period for the visitors to restore parity after the break when Ben Vallance finished off a surging run through the City defence with a snapshot which flew into the top left-hand corner.

United were then reduced to ten men on the hour mark when Shaquille McDonald picked up a second yellow card for a late challenge but despite the extra man advantage, City failed to find a winner.

Meanwhile, Snape has signed former Wolverhampton Wanderers player Adam Osbourne.

Osbourne, who can play at left-back or left-sided centre half, arrived after being released by Wolves at the end of last season as the club prepared for life in the Premier League.

City recorded their first win of the season with a 1-0 win at Coventry Sphinx on Tuesday night.
