City look to bounce back after Ilkeston heartbreak

COVENTRY Sphinx are the visitors to the Victoria Ground this afternoon to face Worcester City after John Snape’s men suffered injury-time heartbreak in a pulsating clash with league leaders Ilkeston Town.

City entertain Sphinx today (kick-off 3pm) looking to bounce back to winning ways after they came away from the Midland League Premier Division trip to the East Midlands empty-handed after conceding deep into added time.

Tom Marshall’s swirling cross-shot in the fourth minute of added time ensured Ilkeston snatched a 2-1 win after a blood-and-thunder clash at the New Manor Ground.

City had taken the lead through hot-shot Jordan Harrison. He bundled the ball home on 58 minutes after Josh Willis and Liam Lockett combined.

But Elliott Reeves levelled with a deflected effort on 76 minutes and after City had Willis sent off going into stoppage time, Marshall was on hand to secure all three points for Ilkeston who look on course for promotion at the first attempt.

The result left Worcester in ninth place in the standings.

Skipper Jordan Stoddart has agreed terms to join Redditch United after the Blue and Whites waived a recent seven-day notice made by the South Premier Central Reds.

Centre-half Stoddart says he wants to test himself at a higher level, hence the move to the Step Three Reds.

Cameron Walker, who signed on dual registration terms from Stourbridge earlier this season but only made two appearances against Highgate United and Studley in the League Cup, has also left City.

New faces are expected to join the City squad in the coming weeks but club chiefs have stressed they haven’t waived a seven-day approach for talented utility player George Forsyth.

Northern Premier side Gresley have been linked with the player.
