City boss says his side can surprise

MANAGER Carl Heeley believes his ever-improving Worcester City side have enough to maintain their Skrill North status this season.

The City manager criticised his sides defensive display against Gainsborough Trinity last week, after drawing 2-2, but having kept two clean sheets since then, a 4-0 win over Workington and a 0-0 draw away to Telford, he believes it’s fully deserved.

“Your are never going to eliminate all the individual errors, but you can keep them down to an absolute minimum,” he said.

“We have been competitive in every one of our ten games we have played. We’ve gone to difficult places, like Telford, Brackley and Colwyn Bay and kept clean sheets with very resolute defending.

“We knew what we were going to have to put up with at Telford. They’re a very big side, and it’s a constant bombardment of them putting long balls into our box.

“We had to be big and strong and we were, we’re becoming quite a difficult nut to crack now.”

City were tipped by many to finish bottom of the pile at the start of the season, but lying in 16th place after ten games has confounded the critics and Heeley is hoping his side can avoid the drop.

“We have got a target this season and I think everyone knows that,” he said. “But everybody thinks we are going to finish towards the bottom of the table, so it’s nice to be where we are.

“We need to keep working hard and it will be nice to surprise a few people.”

Worcester now turn their attention to tomorrow’s (Saturday September 28) FA Cup game with Coventry Sphinx, kick off 3pm.

“We can’t ask for any more than a home tie against a lower league side,” Heeley added. “We have got to be professional and give Coventry Sphinx the respect they deserve, which we will, but I am expecting my players to go out on Saturday and get the right result.”
