Youth matters to former Worcester Mayor Coun Mel Allcott

YOUTH really does matter to the outgoing mayor of Worcester as she presented a cheque for some £22,700 to her chosen charity,

During her year in office, Coun Mel Allcott headed an appeal to raise funds for Perdiswell Young People’s Leisure Club. This complemented her theme as mayor, which was “youth matters”.

She held a variety of fundraising events in support of the popular local charity, which supports local children and teenagers.

Coun Allcott said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my year as Mayor of Worcester and raising money for Perdiswell Young People’s Leisure Club, known affectionately by many as ‘Blue Roof’.

“The highlight for me was the Pride and Prejudice-themed Mayoral Banquet. Thank you so much to everyone who kindly donated their money, gifts and time to such a worthwhile cause.”

Perdiswell Young People’s Leisure Club started in 1976 with the aim of supporting and educating young people in Worcester and the surrounding area, particularly focusing on those who were from a disadvantaged background.

After beginning in a Nissen hut, the group raised funds for a purpose-built two-storey building, which opened in 2000, featuring a multi-purpose activity room, training rooms, a lift and additional facilities.

The club offers youth clubs, an inclusion project for young people with disabilities and complex health needs, summer activity schemes and many other events.

It also operates minibuses to help with transport for its activities and supports other youth groups in organising their programmes.

Money raised by Coun Allcott will be used to support young people’s activities and other young people’s groups that use the centre.

Perdiswell Young People’s Leisure Club Trustees Jenny Purser and Christine King said that they were delighted to receive the funds from Cllr Allcott.

Coun Dr Matt Lamb was elected as the new mayor of Worcester in May. During his year in office he will be raising money for Acorns Children’s Hospice.
