Youngster put names in frame for success with award

CREATIVE youngsters and staff at a Worcester primary school are celebrating after scooping a top art award.

Pupils at St George’s CE Primary School marked winning the national ‘Big Draw Award’ with a ‘Big Draw Day’ to make a mural for the St George’s Lane North school’s library.

Illustrator Petr Hoáček came into school to work with the pupils o the award-winning project led by the school’s two art teachers Sarah Edwards and Claire Horáček.

As well as putting their names in the frame for success, the aim of the St George’s Big Draw was to encourage parents and children to put down technology such as phones and tablets and play together.

Aspiring artists young and old were also challenged to create drawings from words and nature and use their mother tongues, be it English or another language to name objects.

“It is such a huge honour for St George’s CE Primary School Worcester to have won a Big Draw Festival Award for our ‘Playing with Lost Words’ Big Draw,” Mrs Hoacek said.

“The project was inspired by Jackie Morris’ and Robert Macfarlane’s beautiful book with its celebration of nature communicated through words and pictures.

“Our Big Draw was about celebrating play in and with the natural world.

“It is a fantastic achievement for a small school like St George’s to have won this award and it is particularly important in the 21st century that we should do all that is possible to encourage children, families and teachers, in fact everyone, to draw anytime, anyplace and anywhere,” she added.

Kate Mason, director of the Big Draw, said: “With the continued decline of arts provision for all in education, The Big Draw commends all schools who demonstrate the power of drawing and creativity, not only across the curriculum, but within their communities.

“The staff and students of St George’s are leading lights to show the importance and impact of a creative education.”
