YOUNG Worcester opera performers can now take a greener journey to rehearsals.
WODYS (Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society Youth Section) has had a bike rack installed outside WODS Hall thanks to the support of Hannah Cooper, Worcester City Councillor for the Arboretum ward.
The initiative came about after Coun Cooper spotted an opportunity to benefit both the young people at WODYS and the residents who live nearby, using part of her small annual community budget.
The new facility encourages greener travel options for the society’s members and their families. Older WODYS performers who live nearby can now cycle independently to rehearsals rather than relying on lifts, while younger members can enjoy cycling with their parents or carers.
The installation also brings benefits to residents. Rehearsal weekends and evenings can bring increased traffic to the terraced streets surrounding WODS Hall, where parking is already limited. By encouraging cycling, the new bike rack could help reduce the number of cars arriving during busy rehearsal periods.
Coun Cooper said: “WODYS is such a fantastic organisation for young people in Worcester, and when I realised a bike rack could help both the children and local residents, it seemed like a simple and practical project to support.
“It’s wonderful to see young people able to travel more independently and sustainably. I also had the chance to watch a rehearsal for their upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz, and I really enjoyed this sneak peak. The singing and acting is already sounding amazing, I can’t wait to see the finished show.”
