Young designers pool their talent

YOUNGSTERS from Worcester are helping to design an eight-metre high piece of artwork for the city’s new swimming pool in Perdiswell.

Around 100 children, aged eight to 18, from Perdiswell Primary School, Tudor Grange Primary School, Heart of Worcestershire College and RGS Worcester, have recently taken part in workshops to help create striking designs.

They have been working alongside Eric Klein Velderman of the Cantoo design agency to produce the colourful images, to make a lasting impression on the new building.

The final design for the project, which was funded by a contribution from RGS Worcester, will be installed later this year.

Mr Klein Velderman said: “We began with some initial water explorations, by dropping ink into water and filming the resulting swirls with our phones. We also explored the water’s pattern and light reflection.

“The youngsters collected fallen leaves and took rubbings, mixed colour combinations and digitally scanned and abstracted the shapes into paper cut patterns, which were then collaged into exuberant designs.

“The final design will be a composition of many of the children’s work and will be embedded into the building for its lifetime.”

John Pitt, headmaster at RGS Worcester said: “We’re delighted to have been involved in this excellent community project and it’s fantastic RGS pupils’ artwork will be included in this lasting design at the new swimming pool.

“We hope all of the visitors to the swimming pool will enjoy what local pupils have created.”
