Words worth prizes in book day celebrations

YOUNGSTERS from schools across Worcester celebrated ‘World Book Day’ by dressing up as their favourite characters.

Pupils and staff at Red Hill CE Primary School showed off their costumes on Thursday (March 3) and gathered in the school’s hall for the annual World Book Day assembly, where literacy governor Jo Wheldon awarded prizes for the most convincing costumes.

The Midhurst Close school’s overall best dressed winners were handed out as well as those successful in the ‘Extreme Reading Competition’.

The challenge tasked youngsters to get caught reading in an ‘extreme place’ and among the winners was a young bookworm reading on a glass floor at the top of Blackpool Tower and another who was pictured reading on top of a ‘crocodile’.

Even school chef Julie Purser dressed up as the Queen of Hearts, complete with her own heart shaped jam tarts and judged the ‘book cake’ competition.

Tasty ‘Frozen’ cupcakes and a scary Darth Vader creation scooped success to cap another entertaining event.

Young bookworms at Grimley and Holt CE School were challenged to do something a bit different: to dress up as words!

The whole school was filled with nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and abstract nouns.

Organiser Rachael Watkins, said: “The children had explored vocabulary within a given word class and created fabulous costumes depicting their favourite word.

“We found this day to be a wonderful way to promote a love of language and enrich their vocabulary.”

Members of the school council also asked pupils to take ‘shelfies’, photos of themselves next to their bookshelves at home to go on display!

They wanted lots of photographs showing all the variety of books that the children have read, or are looking forward to reading in the future.
