Worcestershire Royal welcomes new arrivals for new year

A BRAND new year ushered in new life at Worcestershire Royal Hospital as eight babies were born on New Years Day.

Midwives at Worcester’s maternity unit had a busy start to 2016 as three boys and five girls were welcomed into the world.

The first to be born was Connor McKowen at 2.14am on January 1, weighing six pound and 15.5oz, to proud parents Chris and Lorelle.

Chris, who is a member of the Armed Forces, this time round, was determined to witness the birth of his second child.

Four years ago the father of two was serving in Afghanistan and missed the birth of his daughter by just 20 minutes, despite his best efforts to get home with the army even getting him on chartered flights to watch the delivery of his first born.

This time though he witnessed the birth from start to finish and even managed to cut his little boy’s umbilical cord.

Rachel Carter, Maternity Matron, said: “All babies are special but it is extra special to have them at Christmas and New Year and all the midwives enjoy working on these dates.

“There is a bit of friendly competition this year too between the main suite and the new Meadow Birth Centre and this year the main suite welcomed the first baby of the New Year.”
