WORCESTER’S own womble has been honoured for her dedication in keeping St John’s clean with a local award.
Coun Richard Udall awarded Charlotte Maloney the St John’s Councillors Good Young Citizens medal during a ceremony held at St John’s Library, with her family, friends and teachers present.
The nine-year-old lives in St John’s and goes to school locally and in addition to the award she was also handed a £20 book voucher and a bottle of red grape juice.
She collects on average up to four big bin liners of rubbish a week in the streets surrounding her home and Coun Udall said she set a great example to others and especially the adults who are dropping the litter.
“She is a modern-day Womble, tidying up after what other folk leave behind, St John’s is lucky to have young good citizens like Charlotte,” he said.
Charlotte said: “I love seeing the area looking better than it was after a litter pick, better for us, wildlife and the environment.
“I hate seeing rubbish around and don’t understand why people do it. I want us to live in a place that is rubbish free and looks like a place to be proud of”.
Proud mum Laura Maloney said: “I am immensely proud of Charlotte, she’s always thinking of others and the consequences of our actions, she loves the natural world and hates to see the pollution and disregard people have for their local area.
“I grew up in Worcester and came back after 18 years in the army, I love St. John’s and want to help make it a better place for all”.
