STORIES from Worcester’s past will come to life when some of the city’s most iconic buildings welcome visitors during the Heritage Open Days scheme.
The Guildhall and The Commandery are among the sites offering free entry and guided tours, giving residents and visitors a chance to step back in time.
As part of the initiative, Worcester mayor Coun Dr Matt Lamb will be welcoming people to the Guildhall and the Mayor’s Parlour, where visitors can learn more about the heritage of the building and its former use.
The Guildhall was built in 1721 and was once the seat of justice for the city. The holding cells, where criminals stayed before appearing in court, are an atmospheric part of the building that still fascinate visitors today.
Heritage tours around the Guildhall and their cells will start on each hour between 10am and 3pm on Saturday September 13.
Tours with the Mayor of the Guildhall and Mayor’s Parlour will follow on Friday September 19 between 2pm and 3.30pm, and on Saturday September 20 at 10am and 11am.
Coun Lamb, said: “Worcester is home to many beautiful historic buildings, each with its own story to tell. The Guildhall is no exception, and I warmly invite everyone to join us for a tour and visit the Mayor’s Parlour.”
The Commandery will also be opening its doors free of charge from 10am to 3pm on Sunday September 21.
Visitors can explore its medieval wall paintings, tranquil walled gardens, and discover its pivotal role in the English Civil War.
In addition, conservation architect Nick Joyce will deliver talks at 10.30am and 1pm, offering insights into the decades of restoration work that have preserved The Commandery for future generations.
Those interested in The Commandery talks are urged to book in advance due to limited numbers at museums-worcestershire.arttickets.org.uk/the-commandery
