Worcester's first repair cafe hailed a success

Worcester Editorial 5th Jun, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

THE FIRST ever repair café in Worcester has been hailed a success.

City residents had the chance to get their broken items fixed at the café on Saturday, May 14 at S.T.A.R.S Adult Day Care Centre, on Stanley Road.

A volunteer team of multi-skilled electricians, sewers, carpenters and a welder gave damaged, broken and torn personal and household possessions a new lease of life at the event, which was run in partnership by Transition Worcester and the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust.

Among the 30 items brought in, a cuckoo clock was fixed and a toy giraffe had an eye carefully sewn back in place – making the two-year-old owner’s day.

Rod Howell, chairman of Repair Café Worcester said: “We have been blown away by the amazing level of support from our volunteer repairers.

“We all really enjoyed the first Repair Café at S.T.A.R.S as it was a real hive of activity. The feedback we’ve had from everyone has been incredibly positive.”

“Thanks has to go to Malvern Hills Repair Café for their advice and support and to Worcester Soup, as the Repair Café fund was boosted by £215, which enabled us to purchase some essential tools and consumables.”

Anda Phillips, volunteer coordinator at the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust said: “We’re holding a Repair Café on the second Saturday of each month at S.T.A.R.S and as the word gets around we’re sure that our session’s will snowball.”
