Worcester's candlelit vigil for the people of Ukraine set for Thursday

Worcester Editorial 8th Mar, 2022   0

A CANDLELIT vigil will be held in Worcester on Thursday to show support for and solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

The event will take place in Cathedral Square for 30 minutes from 7pm and people from all the city’s communities are welcome to attend.

The Knife Angel, the National Monument Against Violence and Aggression, is currently being hosted in Cathedral Square and will provide an appropriate backdrop for the vigil. The Ukrainian flag is also being flown in the square.

People attending the event are encouraged to bring their own candles, although some will be available for anyone who does not have one.

Worcester City Council is organising the event, with support from all four political parties represented on the authority.

A joint statement has been issued from the Council’s four political group leaders, Conservative Cllr Marc Bayliss, Labour’s Cllr Adrian Gregson, Green Cllr Louis Stephen, and Liberal Democrat Cllr Mel Allcott.

The leaders said: “There can be no one in Worcester who is unmoved by the plight of Ukraine at this terrible time. Our city and county are home to a strong and proud Eastern European population and we know that they will stand with us when we say that our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine.

“Many refugees from this conflict will make their way to the UK under the Government’s programme, and we look forward to welcoming some of them to Worcester.”

Worcester’s historic Guildhall is currently being lit in blue and yellow as a mark of respect for the people of Ukraine.
