AN ELATED Worcester University boss has completed his 280km walk to raise cash for student scholarship and hardship funds.
Vice Chancellor Prof David Green left Porto in Portugal on May 16 and arrived in Santiago de Compostela in Spain on Wednesday (May 28), raising more than £56,000.
David said: “I feel a sense of elation to have walked all this way. On my journey I’ve met so many people from so many countries. It has been a true education to walk harmoniously with people with the same values of kindness, courtesy, community, and fellowship.
“This challenge has reinforced my belief in the importance of education, understanding, and international cooperation.
“Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. Your gifts will strengthen education for so many people for years to come.”
Throughout his walk, David has attracted support from around the world.
The Minister for Skills with responsibility for universities, Jacqui Smith, said: “I’ve been following David’s Compostela challenge on social media.
“Congratulations, David, as you cross the finish line and complete your journey. You’ve worked hard to raise funds and awareness for such a worthwhile cause.”
The walk was a central part of the university’s two-year-long Anniversaries Campaign, marking two major milestones in its history- 20 years since gaining full university status in 2005, and 80 years since being founded as an emergency teacher training college in 1946.
Beatrice Grant, His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire and President of the Anniversaries Campaign, added: “Congratulations, Vice Chancellor David, on completing your remarkable Compostela Challenge.
“Your journey from Porto to Santiago is an inspiring testament to resilience, adventure, reflection, and commitment. These values resonate deeply with the University of Worcester and beyond.
“The funds you have raised so far for the university campaign are a tremendous contribution, well done.”
