Worcester nursery holding charity sale ahead of closure

Worcester Editorial 17th Aug, 2023   0

UNITOTS Nursery at the University of Worcester will welcome children for the final time this Friday (August 18) as the popular centre it is set to close after more than 30 years.

The university says it is continuing to consult with Unitots staff about their future leaving residents fearing that the decision would add to the ‘massive’ waiting list for nurseries places in the city.

The decision to close the nursery was made following a consultation earlier this year.

Unitots was originally opened in 1992 to help students with young children but later opened the service up to staff and all parents in Worcester and the wider county.

A University spokesperson said: “The University ensured Unitots was organised highly flexibly to fit in with student study.

“But in recent years demand for the nursery, particularly from students, has fallen significantly.

“The situation is worsening rather than improving and there is no indication this position will change.”

In the 12 months before March 31, Ofsted reported 400 net nursery closures across the UK.

On Friday, August 18 and Monday, August 21 the nursery will be selling off some of its equipment with all cash raised going to Worcester Foodbank.

The sale is from 9.15am to 4pm on both days, cash buyers only.
