Worcester teenage racing sensation makes stunning start to season

WORCESTER’S teenage racing sensation Haydn Chance’s season has gotten off to an excellent start as he and teammate Theo Micouris have won three out of the first four races of his campaign.

The first two rounds of the Ligier European Series took place at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on April 12 and 13, with Haydn racing in the JS P4 Category for Team Virage.

Haydn, 17, and teammate Theo qualified in third for the first race and on Pole for the second, winning both, before winning a third race at La Castellet this weekend.

A safety car was deployed in race one of the season’s Barcelona leg, bringing the pack together, with action getting under way with five minutes to go.

Haydn and Theo crossed the line in second place, but a post-race penalty for the winning car meant they were promoted to P1 and took their first win of the season.

The second one-hour race took place later in the afternoon, with the Team Virage car leading from lights out and extending their lead lap after lap.

Last-minute dramas didn’t halt the charge and Haydn took his second win of the season.

He added: “We did a brilliant pitstop, perfectly done by the team. I had a good gap to build on thanks to Theo.

“I think I lost a few seconds as my tyres got worse and worse while the track was getting hotter and hotter.

“Then the safety car happened and at the restart, I tried to keep everyone back.

“It was just about getting away, staying consistent, keeping relaxed and taking the win.”

Haydn and Theo followed up their impressive displays in Spain by winning race two of the La Castellet Heat on Saturday.

Haydn added: “I think I got a fairly good start and I made it through with no damage thankfully.

“I tried to start building up the pace but I struggled a little bit as there is such a long straight and without any slipstream it was hard.

“I brought the car to the pits in P4 and then handed it to Theo.”

Next up for Haydn is a trip to the iconic racing town of Le Mans on June 9.
