Worcester student posts elite time in charity half marathon

Worcester Editorial 11th Apr, 2024   0

A WORCESTER student has set an elite half marathon time in his recent fundraising race when taking on his biggest sporting challenge to date.

Max Fenton, aged 12, who is a sports scholarship student from RGS Worcester, set himself the task of running a sub-two-hour half marathon to help support the costs of an upcoming rugby tour with his Under-13s team, Droitwich Rugby Club (RFC).

The boy from Earls Commons in Droitwich smashed his target by running the race in a ‘staggering’ 1 hour 38 minutes, putting him in an elite level category in comparison to average running times for his age.

As well as destroying his target race time, he has topped his fundraising goal after reaching £700 at the time we went to press.

The money will go towards his upcoming rugby tour as well as the purchase of video recording equipment to analyse the team’s games.

His Uncle, Steve Fenton, a seasoned half marathon and marathon runner who ran alongside Max, said it was a challenging route with a particularly tough three miles uphill start.

In total, the pair took on a 159-metre elevation.

Max’s rugby teammates and coaches were at the start and finish line to cheer him on.

Some of his teammates and one of his coaches, Tom Groves, even ran the last leg to the finish line with him which was an ’emotional and heartwarming’ moment for Max’s mother, Louise Fenton.

The young elite runner will be fundraising until April 21.
