Worcester man with Parkinson's creates history in charity bell-ringing challenge

Worcester Editorial 25th Jan, 2024   0

A MAN with Parkinson’s has braved a divine charity bell-ringing challenge at Worcester Cathedral to create a unique bit of history while raising much-needed cash to help those facing similar experiences.

Chris Phillips decided to use Saturday’s feast of St Wulfstan to ring the heaviest bell at the Cathedral for around four hours, known as a ‘full peal’.

Chris, who is a part of Worcester Cathedral’s Guild of Bell-ringers, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2021.

Ever since his diagnosis, he has planned to use his hobby of bell-ringing to raise cash for Parkinson’s UK.

The bell Chris rung on Saturday (January 20) was 2.5tonnes, but he completed his task while raising over £5,000 for Parkinson’s UK.

He claims he is the first person with Parkinson’s to have ever rung a bell of this size to a peal.

Chris said: “Parkinson’s UK do amazing research and support for anyone living with this disease so I wish to raise as much money as possible.”

Worcester Cathedral took to social media to congratulate Chris on his achievement and described him as an inspiration to all.
