WORCESTER is hosting a range of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D Day.

On the lead up to and after the D Day anniversary on June, 6 there will be events including the lighting of a beacon at Fort Royal Park at 7pm followed by a flag raising and the Last Post.

Worcester City Council’s Armed forces champion Pat Agar, said: “We have a host of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D- Day.

“The event at Fort Royal Park will be one not to be missed, culminating with the lighting of a beacon.”

The lead-up begins on Saturday June, 1 at the Guildhall when colonel Stanford Cartwright will talk about the Worcester Regiment and its involvement in build up to D-Day and beyond, starting at 11am.

From June 6-8 there will be displays in place at the Guildhall from 10am until 4pm daily, telling the story of D-Day and the Second World War and the role Worcester played in the military effort on the frontline and home front.

A new display is being unveiled at the Museum of the Worcestershire Soldier, Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery from May, 28 and available throughout the events taking place.

During D-Day (Thursday June, 6) the Worcester Yeomanry Museum Facebook page will be live reporting from the Regimental War Diary throughout the day.

Commemorations will then begin at 9.15am in Cathedral Square with the raising of the flag and standards at Cathedral Island.

Pupils from Tudor Grange Academy and Tudor Grange Academy Perdiswell will be performing the School’s Poem in period costume from 11am.

For those unable to make the D-Day commemorations at Fort Royal Park there will be an event at Cathedral Square taking place at 10am June, 8.

The Royal British Legion will also be in attendance, before a closing down ceremony is held by the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment.
