WORCESTER Cathedral Chamber Choir is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary with a feast Baroque choral and orchestral music.

The choir has around 35 auditioned singers and will be joined by professional players of The Musical and Amicable Society in a new programme – featuring the two giants of the Baroque era: Bach and Handel.

Taking place at St Martin’s church on Saturday, May, 25.

Stephen Shellard, the choir’s founder and director said: “The foundation of the choir was historic in that for the first time in Worcester Cathedral’s 900-year history, female voices became part of a cathedral choir.

“Our members join because of a core wish to sing services in the magnificent space of Worcester Cathedral.

“Over the years our work has expanded to incorporate a broad range of musical activity, which has also increased our repertoire and our engagement in the wider community.”

He added that he choir frequently chose the cathedral because it has beautiful acoustics and they have always been warmly welcomed.

The choir will continue to mark its anniversary by singing Choral Evensong in Worcester Cathedral at the closing event of the Elgar Festival on June 2; at Westminster Abbey on July 15; at the Three Choirs Festival Worcester on July 27; and in Worcester Cathedral on November 23 to mark the feast of St. Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians.
