Time running out to register to vote in Worcester elections

Worcester Editorial 10th Apr, 2024   0

THOSE wishing to have their say in May’s Worcester City Council elections have only days left to register to vote.

Residents have until midnight on Tuesday, April 16 to ensure they will be able to have their say in this year’s elections, which, for the first time, will have all 35 seats on Worcester City Council up for grabs at once.

Worcester’s political map has been redrawn this year, meaning the number of wards in the city will increase from 15 to 16.

The city council is responsible for services such as planning, bin collections, housing, leisure and parks.

People will also be able to cast their ballot to decide who becomes West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner.

Voters will be able to cast their ballot in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote.

The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday, April 17, and the cut-off point to register for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday April 24.

Voters who do not have a suitable form of photo ID, such as a passport, driving licence, immigration document or an older person’s bus pass, can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate by 5pm on April 24.

Shane Flynn, Returning Officer for Worcester, said: “Time is running out to make sure you can take part in Worcester’s local elections.

“If you have recently turned 18 or moved home, it is particularly important to make sure you are correctly registered to vote.

“This is your chance to make your voice heard and decide who represents you on big issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in Worcester, from housing and parks to bin collections.”

Visit gov.uk/register-to-vote to register to vote or go to www.worcester.gov.uk/elections to apply for a postal or proxy vote or a Voter Authority Certificate.
