Road closure ahead of multi-million pound Worcester improvement works

Worcester Editorial 18th Mar, 2024   0

MULTI-million-pound improvement works in Worcester City Centre are set to enter their final phase, with a full road closure set to take place.

Final works will see an upgrade to public space on Angel Street, including new surfacing materials, lighting, street furniture and trees that will complement the surrounding area.

The scheme will see a general widening of footway areas.

Most of the works will be delivered under a full road closure, which will start just after the school Easter holidays in April and will be in place for up to 14 weeks.

Cyclists will get full access to the street and a new loading bay will be introduced from which all deliveries to the street can be made safely.

Upgrades have already been completed in Angel Row, Angel Place, St Swithin’s Street, Trinity Passage, The Cross, Trinity Street, St Nicholas Street and The Foregate.

The most recent improvements to Foregate Street are due to be completed shortly.

Depending on progress with Foregate Street, it’s hoped works will start at the end of March with some advanced works which can be done safely ahead of the road closure.

The overall programme is part of a £17.9million regeneration of the city centre.

Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy, Infrastructure and Skills, Coun Marc Bayliss, said: “I’m really pleased to see that the improvements are being delivered to such a high standard and to the expected timescales.

“The works so far have made a huge difference to the appearance of the city centre and I look forward to the final phase starting soon.

“This major investment in the heart of Worcester brings benefits to local retailers, businesses, residents and visitors alike.

“The project will contribute significantly to the sustainability of our local economy and long-term viability and prosperity.”
