Rallying call to support independents after Worcester cafe and restaurant close

Worcester Editorial 1st May, 2024   0

A RALLYING call has been made for people to support Indie businesses in the city after two firms on the same Worcester Street announced they were closing within days.

Last week, popular cafe G&Tea on Friar Street announced it would be shutting its doors for the final time on Saturday, May 11.

A statement said despite battling on for a while, owners were unable to ‘weather the storm’ faced by ‘so many other small businesses’ any further.

G&Tea was named the ‘best cafe in Worcester’ last year by the Restaurant Guru website and offers award-winning afternoon tea, coffee, sandwiches, cakes, scones, and a breakfast and lunch menu.

Just days after their announcement, Caribbean restaurant Tortugas, also on Friar Street, revealed it would be permanently closing.

A statement released on their social media said: “It is with heavy hearts we say goodbye to this chapter of Tortugas.

“We want to express our deepest gratitude to our wonderful customers who have supported us throughout the years, thank you for being a part of our journey.”

Following the announcements, former Worcestershire Poet Laureate Leena Batchelor, who owns high street bookshop, Script Haven, said the ‘sad truth’ that costs are rising meant without support, indies were struggling and urged people to help.

She added: “It is with great sadness we hear of the closure of both G&Tea and Tortugas Worcester, these are more than just businesses, they’re part of what makes a city vibrant and alive.

“Without them, a high street becomes bland and soulless.

“We wish the staff of both businesses all the best for their future – they’ve had to make a difficult decision in tough times.

“We understand times are hard and money short, but please consider supporting your local indies before you lose them.

“Even something as simple as spreading the word on social media can help.”
