New West Mercia chief constable ready to serve community

Worcester Editorial 26th Jan, 2024   0

WEST Mercia’s new Chief Constable has spoken of his desire to place communities at the heart of policing.

Kyle Gordon was confirmed as the force’s new figurehead following a meeting of the West Mercia Police and Crime Panel on January 19.

Mr Gordon is the chosen candidate of West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion.

He will bring nearly 30 years of experience to West Mercia from many police forces.

The new Chief Constable has served in the Royal Ulster Constabulary, British Transport Police and Commander of the Metropolitan Police.

Mr Gordon was chosen as Mr Campion’s preferred candidate following a ‘vigorous and open’ process in December.

He said:

“I am delighted to be confirmed as the next Chief Constable for West Mercia Police.

“I am passionate about delivering a community focused police service that is visible, accessible, responsive, and effective to build further on the trust and confidence we have amongst our communities.

“I am very much looking forward to taking up the role of leading the force and working with PCC John Campion and partners to deliver the Safer West Mercia Plan, whilst ensuring the communities of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire and Telford and Wrekin are at the heart of policing.”

Interim Chief Constable Al Murray has filled the role during the search for Pippa Mills’ permanent replacement.

Ms Mills announced her ‘bittersweet’ departure from West Mercia Police last August after becoming the force’s first female chief in September 2021.

She has taken up the role of assistant commissioner with the Metropolitan Police.

PCC John Campion said:

“I welcome Kyle’s drive to build on the progress that has been made to deliver a police service communities can trust and be proud of.”
