List of Worcester road closures revealed ahead of Queen Camilla visit

Worcester Editorial 26th Mar, 2024   0

THE ANNUAL Royal Maundy Thursday Service will take place at Worcester Cathedral from 8am to 2pm this Thursday, March 28.

Several roads will be closed as the city prepares to welcome Queen Camilla.

Among them are – A44 (from Junction of City Walls Road and Edgar St to Junction of Quay Street), Cathedral Square Service Road (access to NCP Car Park), Cathedral Square, College Yard, Copenhagen Street (from Car Park to High Street) , Fish Street (from Deansway to High Street) and Friar Street (from the junction of College Street to NCP rear exit) .

Traffic will be diverted via the north eastern side of the city centre, via the Butts and City Walls Road. Copenhagen Street Car Park will be closed to the general public, and there will be no access to the NCP Car Park at Cathedral Square.

There will also be barriers placed along Deansway, which people can stand behind if they would like to watch HM The Queen enter and exit the Cathedral.

The Maundy Service happens each year on the Thursday before Easter Sunday – The Sovereign follows the tradition in distributing special Maundy money to local pensioners in a service which commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles.

This year the money will be distributed by The Queen Camilla on behalf of The King.

Early in her reign, Queen Elizabeth II decided Maundy money should not just be distributed to the people of London, and so she began travelling to various cathedrals or abbeys to give gifts to local people.
