Joy as Worcester's first peregrine falcon chick hatches

Worcester Editorial 22nd Apr, 2024   0

WORCESTER Cathedral welcomed a new friend today as the first Peregrine Falcon chick hatched.

The first chick arrived this morning, welcomed into the world by hundreds of engrossed viewers watching on Worcester Cathedral’s YouTube livestream.

Cathedral peregrine experts have said the chick appears to be doing very well so far and predicted more of its brothers and sisters are set to join in the coming days.

Four eggs were laid by Worcester’s two peregrine visitors, named Peter and Peggy by Cathedral followers.

The adult birds have been visiting the nest box for around a month now.

The action is being live-streamed on a screen inside the cathedral.

Cathedral bosses will also host a series of drop-in sessions with a team of experts, cameras and scopes to allow people to see the birds up close later in the season.

Peregrines have been in and around Worcester for hundreds of years and are depicted in the cathedral’s great West Window and parts of the stonework.
