POP-UP MMR vaccination clinics are being set up around Worcestershire following an increase in the number of measles cases in parts of the West Midlands.
Sharp rises in areas, including Birmingham and Coventry have prompted Worcestershire County Council to set up the free pop-up clinics.
Figures show 90 per cent of children in the county have been vaccinated with two doses of the MMR by the time they are five years old, which comprehensively reduces the risk of getting measles.
Although there are no current cases in Worcestershire, there are around 4,000 children in the county who still need their jabs.
The clinics are being run locally by the NHS throughout February, taking place in libraries across Worcestershire.
Next Sunday (February 17) there will be further clinics at The Hive in Worcester, Malvern Library and Evesham Library – all from 9.30am to 4pm.
Dr Will Taylor, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire, said:
“Measles is a highly contagious and potentially serious illness especially in young children who are more at risk from severe complications.
“The best way for us to keep measles at bay from our area is to ensure we reach the 95 per cent vaccination rate – especially amongst children.
“The pop-up clinics are open to everyone and I would encourage you to get vaccinated if you haven’t already.”
GP surgeries across the county will also be reaching out to parents via text message, whose children have not been vaccinated.
