Duo stop off at Worcester Cathedral during 100-mile ‘Pommie Pilgrimage’

Worcester Editorial 9th May, 2024   0

A KIND-hearted Reverend stopped off at Worcester Cathedral this week as part of a 100-mile trek with his brother-in-law as part of the ‘Pommie Pilgrimage’ to raise cash for toilets, kitchen facilities and a warm space in Youlgrave’s Norman Church.

Rev Richard Tucker and brother-in-law Rob Barclay, who lives and farms in Worcestershire, have played their part in a huge walk to all Anglican Cathedrals in England.

Richard started his pilgrimage from Birmingham on Sunday with a blessing from Canon Andy Delmege.

He stopped at Worcester Cathedral on Monday, where he was joined by Rob, and the duo are set to arrive at Hereford Cathedral today (Friday) via Gloucester Cathedral.

The ‘Pommie Pilgrimage’ started on Palm Sunday and has seen Cathedral clergy from across the country play their part.

All Saints Church in the Peak District village of Youlgrave is a Grade One listed building.

Currently, everyone has to cross a busy road to go to the toilet there, and there have been some ’embarrassing and unfortunate’ accidents resulting in dedicated members of the congregation never setting foot in the church again.

The walkers plan to raise £42,000 towards All Saints’ renovations, with almost £21,000 raised so far.

Richard said: “The Pommie Pilgrimage is a chance for me to follow two passions of mine – making historic churches fit for the 21st century and walking in the beautiful English countryside.

“I served in the Birmingham diocese for many years, so it was a natural route to choose, and I’m delighted to be walking alongside my brother-in-law Rob Barclay, who is a seasoned long-distance walker.”
