COUNTY council leader Coun Simon Geraghty and cabinet member with Responsibility for the Environment, Coun Richard Morris, have thanked all those who came together in a fully co-ordinated response during the recent floods.
They also looked at locations where minor improvements could be made to mitigate future flooding to keep the transport network moving.
Storm Henk brought intense rainfall to the county, causing river levels across the River Severn and the River Avon to quickly rise, resulting in significant flooding.
During the storm, teams worked around the clock to help keep strategic routes open, and to support residents and businesses. During this time, the County Council are aware of over 200 properties that were affected by this flooding event.
Coun Geraghty, said: “I am immensely proud of the efforts of those who came together to respond to the impact of flooding here in Worcestershire.
“The floods we have seen in our county have been a distressing experience for many of our residents and businesses and I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in helping our communities.”
Coun Morris added: “Our county experienced significant rainfall and flooding last week. I’d like to thank our county council staff, partners and the local communities for their time and effort last weekend to respond to the events. The response, during the storm and flood recovery has been excellent.”
The Lord-Lieutenant of Worcestershire also visited Worcester city centre to see for herself the aftermath of the floods and meet teams responsible for the clean-up operation.
Beatrice Grant, who was appointed to the role of Lord-Lieutenant of Worcestershire in March 2023, went to Worcestershire County Cricket Club where she met with Worcestershire County Council officers who have been involved in the flood response.
She said: “It has been fascinating to hear about how our river levels are monitored and the close liaison between the multiple agencies involved in the response to floods.
“I’ve heard first-hand about the complexities of setting up the contraflow operation in Worcester to keep the city moving, and how teams work around the clock to close and reopen roads as necessary as river levels change. It’s been very impressive.
“I would publicly like to thank everyone for their hard work during the flooding, and of course, for the extensive clear up operation that is now under way to enable the roads to safely reopen.”
