A BID by the Faithful City to give a Worcester Second World War veteran a very special 101st birthday saw 457 people send in cards wishing him happy returns.

Peter Matthews, who lives at the city’s Belmont Care Home, celebrated his 101st birthday earlier this month.

To mark the occasion, home manager Sandie Preece launched a bid to gather 101 cards for Peter from across the community.

The campaign saw an overwhelming response, with the birthday boy receiving cards as far away as Essex.

Canvey Junior School contributed 220 handmade cards towards the huge total.

And avid Arsenal fan Peter will also be going to see his favourite team live after ther Belmont managed to secure tickets for him to go and watch a match.

Peter said: “I am overwhelmed by the love and kindness shown to me on my birthday.

“The support from The Belmont and the community means the world to me.”

Born in Worcester in 1923, Peter’s adventurous spirit led him to volunteer as an air gunner aged just 19.

He then spent three years serving in the Second World War.

After his service, he moved to India, where he met the love of his life.

Together, they built a life in London but she passed away a decade ago due to dementia.

In July 2022, Peter returned to his roots in Worcester for a holiday with family, and he later decided to sell his London home and move to The Belmont to be closer to his loved ones.

Sandie added: “Peter is the heart and soul of our community, embodying kindness and joy.

“Peter’s journey, filled with resilience, love, and community spirit, has touched the hearts of everyone.

“We are grateful for his presence and the light he brings to us all.

“His legacy continues to inspire and uplift all who know him.”
