Calls for better governance in rugby following Worcester Warriors collapse

A CALL has been made for better governance for Rugby to ensure the sustainability of local clubs in the wake of Worcester Warriors’ collapse into administration in 2022.

Worcester MP Robin Walker made the call during a House of Commons debate last week providing an update on the implementation of the Government’s new football financial framework.

Mr Walker suggested other sports including Rugby would benefit from a strong regulatory framework built to ensure the people running clubs are sufficiently qualified to run a club sustainably.

Worcester and the wider West Midlands have been without a top-flight rugby team since the RFU suspended the Warriors in 2022.

Mr Walker said: “Like many towns and cities across the country, Worcester loves its sport, and I believe it is crucial for us to restore a sustainable professional rugby club here.”

“Rugby, and many other sports, stand to benefit from a strong but balanced regulator which protects clubs from those who are not fit to be directors bringing clubs to financial ruin.

“I hope the Government can continue to understand more about what works from the football financial framework and apply this knowledge in support of our local rugby clubs.”
