A LOCAL Worcester resident has won this years HART prize for human rights.

Eltayeb Bashar, a recent LLB law graduate and current international human rights law master’s student, has been awarded the prestigious prize for his essay highlighting the underreported civil war in Sudan.

The competition, hosted by the Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART), saw entries from universities worldwide, including the University of Sydney and the University of Birmingham.

Eltayeb’s essay, titled ‘Sudan’s Forgotten War: Addressing One of the Greatest Humanitarian Crises of Our Time,’ drew from personal experience and extensive research.

His work sheds light on the ongoing conflict in Sudan, bringing much-needed attention to a humanitarian crisis that has been largely overlooked by the global community.

He said: “I’m honoured to announce that I have won the 2024 HART Prize for Human Rights.

“My winning essay was inspired by the hardships of civil war in my homeland and by my family’s suffering in escaping it.

“The essay is dedicated to them.

“I’m grateful for winning amidst tough competition and congratulate my fellow essayists.”

The HART Prize for Human Rights aims to highlight human rights issues in countries where HART operates, promoting awareness and advocacy through student essays and creative projects.

The prize includes a cash award, a signed book by Baroness Cox, work experience with HART, and a tour of the House of Lords.

In addition to his academic pursuits, he runs The Anti-Racism scheme, a local charity that collaborates with the Worcester City Council to organise annual events promoting unity and understanding within the community.
