MILITARY personnel and councillors will gather outside the Guildhall this morning (Monday) to observe the raising of the Armed Forces Day Flag over the Guildhall.

Mayor of Worcester Coun Allah Ditta will be joined by dignatries for the poignant ceremony which will see the flag aised on buildings and famous landmarks around the UK ahead of Armed Forces Day itself on Saturday (June 29).

Following a short speech by Coun Ditta at 11am, the exhortation will be read by David Waldron before the Last Post and a minute’s silence.

The Kohima Epitah will then lead into prayers from Worcestershire’s Royal British Legion Chaplain and a local Imam before the Armed Forces Flag is raised.

The event will be attended by representatives from the 214 (Worcestershire) Battery; the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment; City of Worcester Squadron Royal Air Force Cadets; Sea Cadets and Worcester Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club.

The 214 Battery are bringing a L118 Light Gun and Pinz, which will be on display in the Courtyard.

“Armed Forces Day will be particularly poignant this month, as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings,” said Coun Ditta.

“We are raising the flag over the Guildhall as a sign of thanks and appreciation to all those who put themselves in the front line in order to protect our freedom and way of life. We are also showing solidarity for their loved ones and families.”
