WORCESTER City Council has announced that Lloyd Griffiths, currently its corporate director for operations, homes and communities, is to be recommended for appointment to the role of managing director and head of paid service by the full council when it meets on 24 February.
Following the announcement of David Blake’s retirement, a recruitment process has been underway to find his successor.
The process was led by members of Worcester City Council’s personnel and general purposes sub-committee and supported by external advisors, Solace in Business.
The council’s sub-committee completed the interview process on January 28 and made the unanimous decision to recommend Lloyd Griffiths’ appointment to full council.
Lloyd Griffiths has worked for the council since 2019 and currently has a wide range of responsibilities and a large part of the council’s workforce in his portfolio, covering frontline city services, housing and homelessness, and communities.
Not long after joining the council, Mr Griffiths was instrumental in leading multi-agency work with health partners to deliver Covid vaccination centres and much of the council’s Covid recovery activity.
In his time at Worcester, he has driven innovations in the council’s approach to health and wellbeing, temporary accommodation, asset-based community development, the city’s bereavement service, and the full range of operational services.
He is also a peer assessor for the Local Government Association.
Councillor Lynn Denham, Leader of the Council, said: “As chair of the personnel and general sub-committee , I am delighted that it has come to a unanimous decision to recommend Mr Griffiths for the role of managing director.
“He has the mix of skills and experiences that the city council will need to lead us through Local Government Reorganisation, as well as ensuring that we continue to deliver excellent services to the residents and businesses of our city and complete key capital projects.
“He understands the culture of the organisation and has, over the years, built strong and trusting relationships with members, staff and stakeholders.”
If the full council agrees to the appointment, then Mr Griffiths will take up the post on April 1 2026.
