Why Worcester's trade unions fell silent to remember fallen workers

Worcester Editorial 7th May, 2022   0

TRADE union banners and flags were on display in Worcester to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD).

Members of local trade unions held a one-minute silence in memory of those who have died at work or died from work-related injury or disease.

The event, which was organised by Worcester Trades Union Council (WTUC), was one of many events taking place across the country and around the world to mark IWMD.

A WTUC spokesperson said: “It is a sad fact in 2022 workers are going to work and not returning home to their families in the evening.

“On IWMD we remember those we have lost and we renew our efforts to organise collectively to prevent more deaths, injuries and disease as a result of work.

“Membership of a trade union is key to this. On IWMD we remember the dead and we organise in their memory.”
