Why Worcester is shining a light on nurses as part of a week of university celebrations

THE University of Worcester’s City Campus will be lit with images of nurses as is marks International Nurses’ Day.

A host of events will be taking place at the University, for all nurses and those who have been cared for by nurses, with the strapline ‘What does nursing mean to you?’

Events begun yesterday (Monday) at The Hive where international student nurses wore their national costume and chatted with members of public about why they came to Worcester and why they want to be a nurse.

Today (Tuesday) the University will mark World Hand Hygiene Day. Student nurses will be raising awareness of the importance of correct hand hygiene during an interactive event in St John’s Campus reception.

On Thursday (May 12) Florence Nightingale’s birthday will be marked alongside International Nurses’ Day itself. Student nurses will hold body MOT sessions in reception at St John’s Campus, where they will be taking manual blood pressures, oxygen levels, pulse and temperatures to fellow students, staff and visitors in a privacy screen area.

That evening from 8.30pm, the ceremonial entrance at City Campus, which was the site of the former Worcester Royal Infirmary, will be brightly lit with images depicting nursing.

The celebrations come as the University and several of its students have been shortlisted in the Student Nursing Times Awards. The University has been shortlisted for Best Student Experience and has previously been shortlisted six times as Pre-Registration Provider of the Year.

Robert Dudley, head of the university’s Three Counties School of Nursing and Midwifery, said: “Never more has it been so important to recognise the outstanding work of all the nurses working and training to care for our communities.

“We are very proud of all our students and graduates who go on to make such a difference, and this is a chance for us to say thank you.”
