Why Sue's saddling up on Saturday to raise cash in memory of son Olly

A WORCESTERSHIRE mum is set to cycle 50 kilometres for charity in memory of her son Olly who sadly passed away following a tragic accident.

Sue Irwin, who works at horticultural therapy centre Link Nurseries (part of college group WCG) will don her helmet and click through the gears on Saturday, July 2.

She is being joined by up to 20 family members and friends of Olly Irwin – with the aim of raising as much money as possible for Help Musicians, a cause close to his heart.

Olly, who died in April 2021 at the age of 24, was an ardent dog and music lover, and this year Sue has so far raised £1,290 – and is hoping to eventually hand over £2,000 to the leading UK musicians’ charity.

Sue said: “Olly was a well-respected and talented musician and sound engineer, and so it’s only fitting that all the money raised from the second edition of my 50k cycle ride goes to Help Musicians. As a known contributor to the Worcester music scene, he’d have been thrilled that our fundraising efforts will go toward helping other music lovers.

“He was a keen cyclist, and completing a yearly bike trip in the name of charity and in his honour is a wonderful way to preserve his legacy and bring all of the family and friends that meant so much to Olly together to share memories and engage in an activity he himself would’ve loved to have been a part of.

“We’re all looking forward to helping each other tackle the distance and complete the cycle, while having fun and raising money for musicians like Olly who deserve opportunities to share their talent.

“We’re resolved to continue with as many of Olly’s passions as possible, and next year are looking to organise ‘Ollyfest’ – an independent, private local music festival showcasing Worcester’s musical talent – with all proceeds going to local charities.”

This is the second time that Sue has fundraised in memory of Olly, gifting £7,000 in donations to High Hope’s Rescue Dog Centre in 2021 after a number of people cycled 31 miles from Worcester to Malvern.

A year on, a different route is being used – with Worcester this time acting as the end point for Sue and her fellow cyclists, as well as for a collection of Olly’s school, college and music friends who are completing a ten-kilometre walk.

Every participant will be wearing specially made green t-shirts on the day with Help Musicians logos attached, in testament to Olly’s favourite colour. To support Sue’s amazing cause, visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/ollys-2nd-farthest-bike-ride?qid=7b6a1387040f2b1139ad3a71617a2c1f.
