What do you think about the PM's plans to reduce the number of 20mph zones?

REPORTS suggest Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to announce plans to limit the number of 20mph speed limit zones local councils can impose in its area.

Local authorities have been making some roads, particularly near schools and in heavily residential areas, 20mph.

Discussions about the limits – which some see in some areas as ‘over-zealous’ – have divided towns, cities and the nation.

The move has also put the PM on a collision course with safety charity RoSPA which has expressed concerns about the move.

It claims recent figures show motorist and pedestrian death rates in this country are still too high.

Steve Cole, Executive Head of Policy, Campaigns, and Public Affairs at RoSPA, said: “The evidence shows that local decision making about road safety including 20mph zones is both essential and effective in reducing deaths, and we do not believe that local communities should be subject to blanket decision making from Westminster about their needs.

“It’s important communities feel safe and as it is estimated that 20mph speed limits can result in 40 per cent fewer collisions and a seven-fold reduction in deaths.”
