Welcome boost for Elgar

ONE OF Britain’s most famous composers has continued to make a mark on the village he was born in.

Signs welcoming people into Lower Broadheath, the birthplace of Sir Edward Elgar, have just been installed with a special mention of the area’s most famous son who died more than 80 years ago.

Worcestershire County Council and Elgar Birthplace Museum joined together to fund five signs for the village which feature the new Worcestershire flag rather than the county council logo.

Coun John Smith, county council cabinet member for highways, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to support the Birthplace Museum in being able to celebrate the fact that Elgar was born in Lower Broadheath on the local village boundary plates. We hope that this heightens awareness of one of Worcestershire’s famous historical figures.”

The plates are located on Crown East Lane, Ankerdine Road, Lightwood Lane and the B4204.

Catherine Sloan, director of The Elgar Birthplace Museum, added: “Worcestershire and especially Lower Broadheath meant a lot to Elgar and we are delighted that this is now being celebrated on the new village signs. Elgar became one of the world’s great composers, but he never forgot his humble origins.

“When he became a Baronet in 1931 he chose “Broadheath” for his title and he stated that of all the places in which he lived, it was his birthplace which meant the most to him. This is where he wanted his museum to be and in 1935 his daughter set up The Elgar Birthplace Museum in Lower Broadheath.”
