Warm welcome for recovery cash

Worcester Editorial 17th Dec, 2020   0

LEADING city Tories welcomed the cash boost to the city from the Cultural Recovery Fund which took the amount handed to Worcester causes during the pandemic to more than £1.2million.

The £145,915 handed to the Worcester Arches project is the fourth largest grant handed out in recent months from the Government.

Worcester’s historic Cathedral received £241,624 last month while arts bosses at Worcester Live Charitable Trust were handed £240,000 in October.

A further £190,000 was received by the Cathedral while the Canal and River Trust and Museum of Royal Worcester were handed £143,720 and £107,275 respectively.

The eight grants given to the city so far also include £96,454 to Museums Worcestershire and £50,000 to Dancefest.

Local MP Robin Walker welcomed the additional funding and said the investment has the potential to reinvigorate the area around the arches.

“To a historic city like Worcester our heritage and cultural assets are vitally important, and I am delighted the Government is taking protecting those sites seriously,” he said.

“A lot of cultural organisations have taken a hit as a result of the Covid pandemic so it is important they are provided with the funding they need to continue the work they do.

“We have the opportunity to make this cultural site a real draw for people into the town, which will in turn support the businesses that are working to provide for them.

“I have worked alongside fellow Conservatives at Worcester City Council to highlight the importance of the Arches’ regeneration and today’s announcement is a clear signal that the government are listening.”

Coun Marc Bayliss, leader of Worcester City Council said: “Worcester City Council have been keen to support the Worcester Cultural Partnership which has been a driving force behind the redevelopment of the historic arches.

“Not only is it important for the council to be helping businesses here grow, but the development of the area around the arches themselves will help create an atmosphere of pride in the place we live.”
