A WORCESTER Sixth Form College student has won the over-15s singing category in the W-Factor talent contest.

Sophie Gilbert, who is 16 and from Whittington, was praised for her ‘very strong vocals, amazing technical ability and well-controlled range and pitch’.

Other winners on the night included DJ Amber Orpin, who is 15, from Evesham and attends The De Montfort High School.

She won the music category.

Nelly Ellis, 11, from Offenham, won the dance section for her ‘control, bold choreography and great emotion’.

And the under-15s singing section was won by Poppy Gidley, from Dodderhill School in Droitwich which has recently merged with Worcester’s RGS.

Pershore’s Number 8 Community Arts Centre was packed for the exciting finale of the annual extravaganza of talent.

The judges included dance specialist Jenny Northam and former winners music specialist Jacob and singing specialist Lauren Nicole.

The compère was Andrew Easton from BBC Hereford and Worcester radio, and last year’s under-15s winner Ciaran Baker provided the entertainment during the judges’ deliberations
