Voters set to decide Worcester's county councillors

Worcester Editorial 30th Apr, 2017   0

VOTERS across Worcester will be going to the polls in the Worcestershire County Council elections on Thursday May 4.

Polls will be held in all 57 seats across the county with 10 wards being contested across the Faithful City.

Worcestershire County Council is currently Conservative-controlled with 32 Tories, 11 Labour members, six members of the 2013 group which includes the Liberal Democrats, Liberals and Green Party.

There are six members of the Independents which is comprised of councillors from Independent Community and Health Concern, Independents and Wythall Residents Association).

UKIP have two members of the County Council, although none of the seats in Worcester are represented by Paul Nuttall’s party.

In Worcester, the Conservatives will look to increase the five seats they currently hold while Labour will look to increase their three seats.

Among the interesting battles on offer will be in Bedwardine where Coun Alan Amos will be looking to retain the seat for the Conservatives after long-serving councillor Derek Prodger wasn’t selected to stand again.

He will face competition from the Green Party’s Daniel Casey, UKIP’s Paul Hickling, Mike Mullins of the Liberal Democrats and Labour’s Daniel Walton.

Liberal Democrat Mel Allcott will hope to retain the Claines seat for the party after long-serving Sue Akin stood down.

Mark Hulme from UKIP, Labour’s Robert Lodge, Peter Robinson of the Green Party and the Conservative’s Andy Stafford will challenge for the seat.

A new councillor will be elected in Gorse Hill and Warndon after the seat was won by Coun Alan Amos for Labour in 2013 before he crossed the floor to the Conservatives.

Linda Bell from British Resistance, Owen Cleary of UKIP, the Conservative’s Phoenix Jones, Paul Snookes (Green Party) and Labour’s Ceri Stalker will contest the poll.

Former deputy leader Marc Bayliss has stood down from his St Peter’s seat meaning a new councillor will be elected for the ward.

John Beacham of UKIP, Conservative Steve Mackay, the Green Party’s Jane Moorhouse and Labour’s Stephen Tallett will be on the ballot.

Coun Matthew Jenkins will look to repeat his historic success of 2013 when he became the first Green Party councillor at County Hall.

He won more than 42 per cent of the vote four years ago and will be challenged by Paul Boyes of UKIP, Alan Feeney of the Conservative Party and Labour’s Saiful Islam.
