Vandals slammed after St John's Christmas tree attack

A CITY councillor has hit out at vandals who targeted the Christmas lights on the St John’s roundabout less than a week after they were switched on.

City council chiefs were alerted to the callous act on Saturday, less than two days after the lights were switched on and has reported the attack to the police.

Coun Lucy Hodgson, chair of Worcester City Council’s Place and Economic Development sub-committee, said: “It is very disappointing that mindless vandals have attacked the beautiful lighting on this tree.

“The Christmas lights bring joy to thousands of people across the city, but it seems someone out there wants to spoil it for everyone.

“I hope these people feel guilty about the public’s money having to be used to repair the result of their pathetic actions.”

Council officers are in talks with lighting contractor, Blachere Illumination to agree the next steps. This will involve bringing in specialist equipment, as St John’s is a busy roundabout with a double curb and the tree is 36ft high.

The cost of the repair will be met by Worcester City Council who confirmed repairs would be underway as soon as possible.
