TWO people have been taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after a car crashed into the Co-op store in Lower Wick.

The grey Volkswagen Polo crashed into the side of the wall of the Canada Way store at about 8.45am this morning (Saturday).

According to a West Midlands Ambulance Service paramedic who was at the scene, the 70-year-old driver of the car had a stroke at the wheel.

Paramedic Ali Vinson, on Twitter, said: “I believe driver had a CVA at the wheel. Wall collapsed causing injury to shop assistant.

“The driver was very lucky as was the shop assistant. She escaped with a leg injury and was very shaken up. Thank God there were no pedestrians.”

The 70-year-old driver was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries and his condition is described as stable.

A woman in her 30s, who was in the shop at the time, has also been taken to hospital with serious leg injuries.

The shop and flats above had to be evacuated while checks were carried out on the stability of the building. The road has also been re-opened following the incident.

Mags Moore, who lives in one of the flats above the Co-op store, told the Observer of the moment she ‘felt’ the car hit the building.

“I felt it,” she said.

“I was asleep upstairs in one of the flats. I didn’t know what it was so I went back to sleep.

“Not long after there was a knock at the door to say we had to get dressed as a car had crashed into the side of the wall of Co-op.”

West Mercia Police are not currently treating the incident as suspicious, but officers would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the crash.

Anyone who may have information should call the police on 101 quoting incident 154s of 9th April 2016. Alternatively information can be passed on anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 55111 or via their website.
