Two bridges set for Southern Link Road

Worcester Editorial 31st May, 2019   0

WORK on the Southern Link Road is due to take another big step forward with the installation of two new bridges.

Following the work to fully dual the A4440 Southern Link Road and the extension of the Battenhall Railway Bridge last year, two further bridges are set to be put in place to further improve connections for the public and local businesses.

The first bridge to be installed is the private farm bridge, situated on the east side of the railway line. This bridge will provide a link between the two halves of Upper Battenhall Farm on either side of the carriageway.

For work to progress on this bridge, two night closures of the A4440 Crookbarrow Way between Whittington and Norton roundabouts are planned. These closures will enable installation of the main beams and the concrete deck to be poured for the farm bridge.

A full closure of the carriageway between Whittington and Norton roundabouts will take place in both directions to allow for installation of the main beams from 7pm on Saturday (June 1) until 7pm on Sunday (June 2).

The road will again be closed from 7pm on Saturday, June 22 to 6am on Sunday, June 23 to allow the concrete deck to be poured.

Coun Ken Pollock, cabinet member for Economy and Infrastructure, said: “While work is progressing well on the final phase of the dualling from Ketch to Powick Roundabouts, it’s great to see work to improve connectivity continuing on another part of the Southern Link Road.

“Work to install these bridges is vital and, once in place, they will dramatically improve connections for local businesses and communities.”

Then on the west side, final preparations are being made to install a second bridge, the Crookbarrow Way Footbridge, where further closures will be needed. This bridge will be suitable for pedestrians, mobility scooters, bikes and those on horseback.

It will provide a vital link between the city centre and the new Worcestershire Parkway Railway Station currently being constructed just off M5 Junction 7 as well as being part of the National Cycle Network.
