Tree-mendous effort to plant woodland area

A SITE in Norton will be home to an estimated 38,000 trees by the end of the current planting season as part of a Worcestershire County Council scene.

Planting began at New Farm in mid-December and it’s hoped the figure of 38,000 will be reached by the spring.

The Evesham site is one of a number across Worcestershire as county council chiefs bid to plant 150,000 trees in the next five years.

In addition to the Norton site, a total of 8,000 native trees like Oak, Hazel, Rowan and Birch will have been planted at the Blackstone Picnic Place site in Bewdley.

This tree planting project will make the county more pollinator friendly as land alongside the tree planting areas has been set aside as wildflower meadows.

It is hoped a new wetland can be created adjacent to the River Avon.

Coun Simon Geraghty, leader of Worcestershire County Council, said: “It has been great to see the progress of the project first hand at New Farm, and to see trees in the ground and our new woodland in this area becoming a reality.

“Our commitment to creating new woodlands across the county is a key part of our plan to shape Worcestershire’s future, and I’m looking forward to seeing the continued progress of this plan, and the positive impact the woodlands will have on our communities and wider both now and in the future.”
