Top award for city group

A WORCESTER youth theatrical school has scooped a prestigious award for its sell-out 2016 production of Les Misérables.

Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society Youth Section (WODYS) recently received the ‘Best Youth Production Award’ for its adaptation of the powerful French drama, from the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA).

WODYS’ cabaret group performed a selection of songs from the show at the ceremony, before NODA president Michael Hastilow presented the youngsters with the accolade.

Since it was set up in 1982, WODYS has become one of the most successful youth theatre groups in the West Midlands, having picked up the Best Youth Production Award twice before, for its production of Half A Sixpence in 2011 and Footloose in 2014.

Rachel Price, WODYS choreographer said: “Congratulations to everyone. None of this success would have be possible without the incredible support the youth group received from our talented team of professionals and dedicated volunteers.

“The youth group, which is in its 35th year, just goes from strength to strength and this award is testimony, not only to the talent and commitment of our young performers, but also to the hard work of those behind the scenes.”

The group are currently preparing for their summer show of Whistle Down the Wind, where 57 members, aged 8 to 18, will perform at the Swan Theatre from Tuesday, August 1 to Thursday, August 5.

They recently received a letter from award-winning composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, wishing them luck for the upcoming performances.
