Time to reflect and remember

Worcester Editorial 4th Nov, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

CITY RESIDENTS are being invited to remember all those who have given their lives for peace and freedom at Worcester’s main Remembrance Sunday commemoration.

This year’s event takes place on Sunday (November 8) and will allow the Faithful City to once again pay its respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice both in the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts worldwide.

A service will take place at Worcester Cathedral at 10am, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in the Cathedral grounds.

This will incorporate the two minutes’ silence at 11am, which will end with the firing of a gun, followed by the playing of the Last Post.

The service will be open to the public and it is hoped that large numbers of Worcester people will join the wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial.

Mayor of Worcester, Coun Roger Knight, said: “This will be a solemn, important and moving ceremony to remember the many people who have fallen to protect the freedoms we all enjoy.

“I hope as many people as possible are able to attend.”

Other organisations involved in Worcester’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations include contingents from 214 Battery Royal Artillery; Royal British Legion, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association, Navy, Army and Air Force Cadets; West Mercia Police; Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service; St John’s Ambulance; British Red Cross; the Scouts and Guides.

The service will be followed by a parade along High Street, with the Mayor the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Lt Col Patrick Holcroft LVO OBE, taking the salute outside the Guildhall as veterans and uniformed organisations march past.

Road closures in the city centre will be in place to accommodate the parade and the War Memorial ceremony.

Because of the on-going redevelopment of the Cathedral roundabout, some areas will be cordoned off.
