THOUSANDS of people lined up alongside Olympic athletes to complete the Worcester City Run.

More than 2,500 competitors crossed the finish lines of the Worcester City 10K, Run Bike Run and Young Athlete’s Run on Sunday (September 20) an increase of more than 50 per cent compared to last year’s turnout.

The winner of the men’s 10K was Victor Boit, of Run-Fast, who completed it in 28 minutes and 41 seconds closely followed by fellow club member Jonah Chesum.

European 10,000metre champion Jo Pavey took first place in the women’s 10K with a time of 33 minutes and 11 seconds with Hildah Cheboi close on her heels.

Mathew Hallam arrived victorious in the Run Bike Run challenge men’s event in one hour 38 minutes and 49 seconds and Samantha Boswell took home first prize in the women’s event in one hour and 51 minutes 55 seconds.

The Young Athletes Run saw successes from Andrew Jeavons and Louise Osborne.

Event founder, Steve Cram, said: “It’s been a fantastic day, really building on the success of last year. Once again, the people of Worcester really got behind the event, with great support on the streets of the city and a real surge in the number of entries.

“Well done to everyone who took part and many thanks to all of the volunteers and spectators who helped make the Worcester City 10K, Run-Bike-Run and Young Athletes Run really successful and enjoyable events.

“We’re already looking forward to another even bigger and better Worcester City Run weekend next year.”

Coun Roger Knight, Mayor of Worcester, added: “The Worcester City Run race day brought an exciting and competitive atmosphere to our streets and riverside, with some 2,500 competitors taking part in the event, spurred on by Jo Pavey and Jenny Nesbitt.

“Together with Worcester City Council’s Leisure, Sport, Art and Play team, Steve Cram and everyone at Events of the North managed the day brilliantly.

“The pulse of competitive and community sport was felt by the several thousand spectators and a wonderful day was had by all,” he added.
