Thousands dodge the showers to soak up the fun

Worcester Editorial 16th Aug, 2019   0

AN ESTIMATED 10,000 people attended this year’s Worcester Show in Gheluvelt Park on Sunday (August 11) and the occasional shower didn’t dampen their spirits.

An enhanced line-up of musical entertainment proved a big draw throughout the day, with rock ‘n’ roll from The Strays, ska from The Social Ignition, punk from the VHT’s and acoustic guitar from Kringo Blue among the stand-out performances of the day.

More than 800 entries were received for competitive classes at the Show. The winners included Hazel Clare who won under 18s Best in Show, Anne Crowther whose framed cross stitch of Gustav Klimt’s ‘The Kiss took home the best in section art and craft prize, while Paul Archer won the photography battle.

The fun and creativity honour went to Anika Gulati while St Georges C E Primary School edged out St Barnabas CE Primary School for the school prize.

Fred Hunt won Best in Show with his tally of 63 points.

Local businesses including Newmans Florist, Northwick Road Allotments, The Allotment Shop, House of Haby and RAGS Sewing Shop donated vouchers as prizes for a number of classes.

The winners’ names will be engraved on each trophy, and will be displayed in a cabinet at Worcester’s Guildhall.

Michelle Newell, Worcester Show committee member said: “I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered or contributed to making this year’s Worcester Show such a big success.

“We were thrilled to see so many people having a great day out in the beautiful Gheluvelt Park. We look forward to seeing you all again in August 2020!”

There was lots for children to do at the Show too – with an inflatable slide and bouncy castles from Boing Entertainment, the ever-popular carousel, bungee trampolines, sports day-style races and children’s bumper cars.

Worcester Show organisers will be donating 20 per cent of the parking fees raised to St Richard’s Hospice.
